Hoping to fulfill a lifelong dream, 58-year-old John Dennis approached Bayer Diabetes Care to sponsor his quest - to participate in a 28,000-mile, single-handed race known as Around Alone. John, who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 1996, was the very first person with diabetes accepted into the Around Alone race, and he saw it as an opportunity to share his dream with other people with diabetes, inspiring them to realize that, through self-monitoring and management, diabetes does not have to limit one's dreams.

Bayer inaugurated John Dennis as skipper of the "Bayer Ascensia" in the summer of 2002, and soon thereafter he began his incredible journey. His participation in the race was truly a groundbreaking event - it was the first time a skipper with diabetes participated in the Around Alone global solo yacht race. From September 2002 to April 2003, he pioneered Around Alone's single-handed sail across the Atlantic and from the United Kingdom to South Africa - both firsts for people with diabetes. In a race that pushes competitors to their physical and mental limits, John had the dual responsibilities of managing his boat systems and sails around the clock while managing his diabetes with the same 24-hour dedication.

John sailed the "Bayer Ascensia" not only to achieve his own personal dream, but also to encourage others with diabetes to self-monitor, manage and control their condition. Throughout his voyage, John not only inspired us, but the diabetes community and people who are personally challenged around the globe as well. He met with hundreds of people in each port to share his belief that, through active self-management including diligent monitoring, proper diet and exercise, people can take control of their lives and achieve their dreams.

We were so inspired by John Dennis' courage and vision, we decided to create The Bayer Dream Fund, to recognize and support the efforts of individuals living with diabetes. These are people who self-monitor with Bayer blood glucose meters and manage their diabetes so well that it is only a minor aspect of who they are, allowing them to achieve truly extraordinary personal goals.
